Southee retained one of
New Zealand Cricket's 20
player contracts for the 12
months from 1 August
2009[37] but through the
winter season was left out
of Black Caps teams.
Instead he played as a New
Zealand emerging player,
and for New Zealand A. His
results were encouraging
but Shane Bond's return to
international cricket gave
him another rival for
international selection.
